Dr Russell is a vitreo-retinal surgeon, medical retinal diseases specialist and cataract surgeon.

Treatment of retinal and macular diseases including age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular diseases. Surgical treatment of epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment and cataract surgery.

Dr Russell graduated from medicine at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and completed his ophthalmic training in Christchurch and Auckland.   He was awarded the Cedric Cohen Medal from The Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists for highest academic performance.

Dr Russell completed three vitreo-retinal surgery fellowships during his extensive training. This included fellowships at highly regarded training programmes in North America; The Doheny Retinal Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles and The University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

Dr Russell was Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver and was on staff at Vancouver General Hospital prior to joining The Vision Retinal Institute in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. He currently runs a busy private practice and is known for his high standards and innovation in retinal surgery.

Dr Russell has multiple publications in the field of retinal diseases and surgery. He has been involved in multi-centre clinical research and continues his interest in clinical research and teaching at Vision Retinal Institute.

Dr. Russell is married and lives in Brisbane. His interests include photography, golf and cycling.
