dr-levitz200Dr Lewis Levitz specialises in oculoplastic and general ophthalmology.

Dr Levitz has a special interest in eyelid surgery. He enjoys correcting eyelid malpossitions due to ectropions and ectropions and repairs or reconstructs lids following eyelid tumour removal. He also practices all aspects of general ophthalmology.

Lewis trained at the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated in 1992. His ophthalmology training was completed in South Africa.

He became a Fellow of the College of Medicine of South Africa in 1999 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000.

After completing his training he took up a post as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at St John Eye Hospital until he moved into full time private practice in 2001. He maintained a part time consultant post at the Johannesburg Hospital until 2007.

He completed a fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in the UK in 2005. He is also a founder member of the South African Oculoplastic Society.

A Masters degree in Medicine was awarded to him in 2007.

Dr Levitz has been awarded the prestigious Muthusamy medal for outstanding achievement, awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He received this for the years 1999/2000.

He has also received the following Awards:
1.    Elie Dahan Ophthalmic Surgical Prize for Registrar of the year award in 1999.
2.    Stortz (Bausch and Lomb) Achievement award.
3.    Tetje Patterson Bequest for Ophthalmic Research 1998
4.    Helen Keller Poster award ISOT Rome 2006

Dr Levitz has published letters and articles in five Index Medicus Journals including the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the Journal of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the South African Medical Journal the Ophthalmic Surgery Laser and Imaging Journal and the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology

He has presented papers and posters at 10 international congresses which included topics ranging from trauma to orbital implants. His poster on hydroxyapatite implants won the Helen Keller Foundation award at the International Society of Ocular Trauma in Rome in 2006. This had led to a Masters thesis on the topic of Orbital Implants being awarded in 2007.

Dr Levitz practices from the Vision Eye Institute Hervey Bay and Maryborough in Queensland.
