Dr Gerard Sutton specialises in laser vision correction, modern cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and keratoconus surgery. His areas of expertise include Intacs and corneal cross-linking with Riboflavin treatment.In 1993 Dr Sutton completed his ophthalmic training at the Sydney Eye Hospital where he is now the Senior Staff Specialist in Corneal and Refractive Surgery. In 1996 he completed advanced surgical training at St Thomas’ and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany having received the DAAD and RANZCO Sigma scholarships and thus became the first Australian to complete overseas fellowship training in laser refractive surgery.
Dr Sutton is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Auckland. He is currently a consultant to the Royal Australian Navy and is on the editorial board of the journal Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. His previous appointments include the Inaugural Corneal and Refractive Fellow at Vision Eye Institute Chatswood in 1994, Chief Ophthalmologist for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, chief surgeon in New South Wales for the Artificial Cornea project in 2002 and a member of the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards for LASIK in 2002-5.
Dr Sutton has introduced many new surgical techniques to Australia. He was the first surgeon in Australia to perform LASIK using the IntraLase femtosecond laser and the first to use Intacs for keratoconus. He also recently became the first Australian surgeon to perform a corneal transplantation using IntraLase femtosecond laser.
Dr Sutton has published over 50 peer reviewed papers and textbook chapters, and continues to lecture both nationally and internationally. In 2007 he was honoured as a Visiting Professor to the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and as a keynote speaker to the International Contact Lens Society. In 2008 he was a guest speaker and Chairperson at the World Congress of Ophthalmology in Hong Kong.
