Dr Bourke specialises in treatment of macula, vitreo-retina and cataract. He has a special interest in treatment of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).

Dr Bourke offers surgery & laser treatment of cataract, vitreo-retinal and macular conditions, including ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole and epiretinal membrane.

Due to extensive additional subspecialty training, Dr Bourke is one of few ophthalmologists who manage all complexities of cataract, macular and vitreo-retinal surgery. Whether routine or complex, patients benefit from the calm mind and steady hands associated with this wealth of experience.

Upon completion of Ophthalmology training (1987-91, Brisbane), Dr Bourke furthered his experience by completing two vitreoretinal-macular-cataract fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and St Paul’s, (Liverpool U.K.) between 1991-95.  During this time, Dr Bourke treated UK’s most complex referred cases & this experience in the management of complex cases taught minimisation of complications in routine intraocular surgery.  Dr Bourke’s additional surgical skill-sets and his continued dedication to stay at the forefront of his field, have made him a reliable community resource for the Gold Coast as well as for referrers throughout Australasia, Europe and the U.S. since 1995.

He was a co-founder of The Eye Centre (now Vision Eye Institute) and Short Street Day Surgery in 1998.  Dr Bourke is an Associate-Professor at Bond University, Gold Coast and Director & founder of Vision Retinal Institute.

Dr Bourke has authored 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and been a Guest Lecturer on macular degeneration treatment, diabetes, macular hole surgery and complex cataract and intraocular lens surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a member of Retinal & Cataract associations in US, UK, Europe (ASRS, ANZRS, AuSCRS, ASCRS, EVRS).

Dr Bourke is married with four children and enjoys tennis, golf and playing blues/jazz guitar and piano.
